You may not have heard of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, of which Port Blair is the capital, but the world has been aware of them since antiquity. They appeared on Ptolemy’s second century map of the trade route between Burma and India, and were recorded by Chinese traveller I Tsing in the 7th century. Arabian travellers who passed by in the 9th century described the inhabitants as fierce and cannibalistic, and Marco Polo called this the “land of the head hunters.” Annexed by the British in the 19th century, the islands became a penal colony, housing criminals and freedom fighters from all over the Indian mainland. After India gained independence in 1947, the islands were incorporated into the Indian Union. Now there are few of the indigenous people left, and those have mainly settled in the Nicobars.
