The Mormugao port (latitude 15º 25' N and longitude of 73º 47' E), with a fine natural harbour, is one of the oldest ports on the western coast of India. All the major development activities at the port occurred only after it was declared as a major port in December 1963. The Mormugao port holds the distinction of being the premier iron-ore exporting port in India. The port accounts for nearly 33 percent of the iron-ore exports from India.
Accessibility of the Port
The port is well connected to the National Highway 17A by a two-lane road link.
The Vasco railway station is near the port and is linked with a broad-gauge (BG) line– Konkan railway connect Goa to Maharashtra and Karnataka. The nearest airport is the Dabolim Airport, Vasco da Gama.

Basic facilities at the port include toilets, and taxi parking. The port lacks sufficient facilitating infrastructure and temporary arrangements are made for tourists. The port also lacks a dedicated passenger berth and therefore, passenger vessels are handled on the general cargo berth.
Recent Developments
A cruise-cum-container terminal is planned at Baina with an investment of INR 185 crore37 (or USD 46.6 million ). The proposed construction will be completed through private partnership. Necessary infrastructure such as backup-land area, breakwater, navigation channel, etc., are planned to be constructed. |
