Kolomtota was the port first used by merchants from China and the Far East, India and Persia, who came to trade in the island's famous spices. The city of Colombo derives its name from the Port of Kolomtota (Colombo harbor), which dates back to the Sinhalese Kotte kingdom of the 14th Century. The 1948 was the year of expansion of the Port with the construction of the Queen Elizabeth Quay, the 1980’s saw the Port modernization and the 1990’s saw the deepening of access channel and improving throughput to record levels. Today, the Port of Colombo is rated as one of the top 35 ports in the world. It is situated along the latitude and longitude of 5 55'N to 9 50'N and 79 42'E to 81 52'E respectively.
