Because of its location, Chennai is known as the gateway to southern India.  Like other state capitals such as Mumbai and Calcutta, it is a modern creation, founded by the East India Company in 1639, just north of the ancient Tamil port of Mylapore and the Portuguese settlement of San Thome.  A fortified trading post, Fort St. George, was quickly erected, and over the course of the next century the city flourished, expanding rapidly to absorb many surrounding villages.
