Tourist Attractions around Shimla

CHAIL Around 43 km from Shimla lies the verdant town of Chail, a former summer capital of Maharaja of Patiala. The town which is built on three hills, topped with the Chail Palace, the Chail village and the Snowview mansion, respectively has the world’s highest cricket ground at a height of 2,250 metres. Chail also has a wildlife sanctuary at a distance of 3 km from here making it a hiker’s paradise.




CRAIGNANO
Situated at 2,149 metres above sea level and 16 kilometres from Shimla, is a beautiful picnic spot, Craignano, with a hilltop rest house and well-laid out lawns and gardens.







KUFRI
This lies 16 km to the east of Shimla at 2,510 metres above sea level. The countryside offers a great pportunity for hiking, especially to the nearby Mahasu peak. The town also hosts an annual winter sports festival.





MASHOBRA
This small village lies about 13 km from Shimla on the Shimla-Naldhera road. It is surrounded by thick forests and offers pleasant walks including the one to Sipi where a fair is held annually. A temple dedicated to Goddess Durga here, is worth visiting.


NALDHERA
A pleasant town, Naldhera is known for housing the oldest and the highest golf course in India. The town, at a height of 2,050 metres, is around 23 km from Shimla. A very old Nag temple is also situated here. It is said that Lord Curzon was so enamoured by Naldhera, that he named his daughter after it.





TATTAPANI
Located about 65 km from Shimla on the Shimla-Mandi highway this place is famous for its hot water springs with sulphur content. One can also visit the nearby Hindu temples and Shiv Goofa at Saraur.


WILDFLOWER HALL
This building in Charabra, about 13 km from Shimla, was the residence of the British Commander-in-Chief, Lord Kitchener. Later it was run as a hotel by the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation before it was damaged in a fire in 1993.
