Tourist Attraction in Puri

JAGANNATH TEMPLE - A visit to Puri is incomplete without a visit to the Jagannath temple, one of the four sacred dhams in the Hindu religion. The magnificent temple is dedicated to the Lord of the Universe. Built in the 12th century, it is considered to be one of the tallest (65 m) temples in India. Modelled along the Kalinga style of architecture, the temple consists of the Jagmohanor hall and the Deul or the main shrine, in front. The Nata Mandir and the Bhoga Mandir were built much later in the 14th and 15th century, in the classic Orissa style.

- The Gundicha Ghar having been the house of Lord Krishna’s aunt, Gundicha is another important site to visit in Puri. It is believed that, the Lord stays here for 9 days during the famous Rath yatra or chariot-pulling festival of Puri. On the day of the Rath Yatra, Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are ceremoniously taken around in gorgeously decorated wooden raths (chariot) all the way from the Jagannath temple to the Gundicha temple where they are welcomed by their aunt by feeding them padoapitha (rice cakes).

- Puri beach is set apart by its utter simplicity, the local sweet and snacks hawkers, the warm people and the extensive stretches of white sand with the sea water swishing over your feet. A lazy stroll by the sea with a few sips of hot tea or tender coconut water adds to that delightful experience. Moreover, you can also request the local boatmen for a ride.

- One place to visit in Puri is the Indradyumna Tank, famous for its religious relevance and its relation to Lord Krishna. The temple has a Child Krishna temple close by and a small shrine dedicated to King Indradyumna of Orissa. Located on the north-western part of the Gundicha Ghar, this is one of the five sacred tanks of Puri.

ATHARNALA BRIDGE - Atharnala Bridge built in the 13th century over the Mandupur stream is another site to visit in Puri. The bridge situated at the entrance of the town is considered to be a manifestation of architectural genius. This massive bridge which is around 85x11 metres is still used by the people.
