Tourist Attraction in Pune

SHANIWAR WADA - Shaniwar Wada Palace built by Balaji Rao, the grandfather of the last Peshwa in 1736, used to be the home of the mighty Peshwas. Today, only the massive outer wall of this palace remains as the rest of it was burnt down in 1827. The main entrance is through the iron-spiked Delhi Gate. The adjoining street was used to punish people by crushing them under elephants. The palace gardens were irrigated by Hazari Karanje, meaning thousand jet fountain, though there were only 97 jets in reality!.



ATALESHWAR CAVE TEMPLE
- Pataleshwar Cave Temple is quiet, elegant and exudes spirituality. Adding to the tranquility and beauty of this site is the circular stone gazebo called Nandi mapandapam, near the entrance of this small underground temple.

RAJA DENKAR KELKAR MUSEUM - The result of passionate efforts of a single person, Dr. D.G.Kelkar, this museum has an eclectic and exceptional collection. It is a pleasant change from other well-known Indian museums. The Raja Denkar Kelkar museum exhibits the diversity of Indian culture in a subtle and charming way. Some interesting objects exhibited here are an elephant-shaped foot scrubber, a brass scorpion revealing a secret lock and eight images of Lord Ganesha carved on a bean.

KASTURBA SAMADHI
- Kasturba was the wife of Mahatma Gandhi and she died at Aga Khan Palace, where Gandhi was imprisoned by the British. Kasturba Samadhi is located near the Aga Khan Palace and is now the Gandhi National Museum. The samadhi contains the ashes of Kasturba Gandhi.
