Tourist Attraction around Cochin

Chennamanagalam - Chennamangalam, centre of handloom weaving and coir manufacturing, was a centre of the Jewish Colony. The seat of Paliath Achan, the prime minister of the former state of Cochin is also here. The famous Vaipinkotta Seminary, built by the Portuguese, used to stand in the vicinity. An old Syrian Catholic Church built in 1201 now stands near the remains of the seminary.


Cherai Beach
- Situated on the borders of Vypeen Island 21 ks from the city, the beautiful Cherai Beach is an ideal for swimming. If lucky, one can also see dolphins here. A typical Kerala village with coconut groves and paddy fields nearby is an added attraction here.






Kalady
- Located 45 km from Cochin, next to river Periyar is Kalady, the birthplace of Adi Shankaracharya a great Indian philosopher in the 8th century AD. There re shrines devoted to Shankaracharya: one dedicated to to Goddess Sharada and the other to him as Dakshina Moorthi.





Kanjiramattom Mosque
- Thirty kms from Cochin at Kanjiramattom is the mosque believed to have been built over the mortal remains of Sheikh Parid. The great Muslim saint, Bavar prayed here and attained eternal bliss. Thousands of devotees swarm this place during the Kodikuthu festival in December-January.

Pallipuram Fort - Pallippuram fort, situated on the northern end of Vypeen Island.was built by the Portuguese in 1503. It is among the oldest existing European monuments in India. The fort was taken over by the Dutch in 1661 and subsequently sold to the State of Travancore in 1789. The Catholic Church here is an important pilgrim centre for the Christians.

Trichur - Trichur, also referred as the cultural capital of Kerala, is in the central part of the state. The region has a number of art schools, museums, and institutes, dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Kerala. One The Vadakkunathan Temple, located on a raised hill and dedicated to Lord Shiva, is an important pilgrim centre.
