Gangaikonda Cholapuram - The historic city of Gangaikonda Cholapuram is at a distance of 50 km from Chidambaram. Associated with, Rajendra I, the Chola king who built it as his new capital. A marvellous Shiva temple belonging to the Chola dynasty is a major attraction here. The temple is prolifically sculptured and a big Nandi stands in front of it.





Kalvarayam Hills - The beautiful Kalvarayam Hills, located 150 km north west of Chidambaram, lies on the western side of Kallakuruchi taluk. Gifted with two waterfalls, these hills are spread over 600 sq. km. It is an ideal destination for those seeking solitude.

Pichavaram - The picturesque locale of Pichavaram, 16 km east of Chidambaram, has a well developed mangrove forest. Its backwaters provide sufficient scope for rowing, parasailing and canoeing. Separated from sea by a fascinating sand bar, Pichavaram spreads over an area of about 2,800 acres. Fooding and lodging facilities are provided by Tourism Development Corporation of Tamil Nadu.




Tarangambadi - 40 kms from Chidambaram lays Tarangambadi or Tranquebar, an old Danish settlement. The appeal of the town is the Dansborg fort. Built by Ore Gedde, commander of the Royal Dutch Navy, this 17th century building is in good condition except for the deteriorating ramparts.





The enchanting Church of Zion - The Church of Zion, situated 40 kms from Chidambaram at the corner adjacent to the the Queen Street and King Street of Tranquebar, church was built in 1701. The church went through a series of restructuring in 1782 and 1839. Today the vaulted roof is a part of its structure.

The Gate - 40 km from Chidambaram, lies the 200-year-old Gate, a structure of historical and architectural interest. The Gate is placed in such a way that one has to pass through it on the way in and out of town.
